Returning home from burying my foster brother today, I stopped off at a friendly cotton patch and put 10 rounds through my 9mm Airweight J-frame and 8 through my Browning 1911-380.
    .
Thirty feet, standing, two handed, really crappy shooting, target was a paper plate. First two shots with the J-frame missed low (looking for point of aim), had one flyer - dunno where it went, pulled two to the right and high.
With the 1911-380, point of aim was 3" above the +.
Had one flyer, pulled 2 to the right....

I think I may be yanking the trigger on the flyers. Wasn't shaking today.
Scatter was about half the diameter of the paper plate.
My days of decent shooting may be behind me......

Thumbs up to that, but the J-frame ain't gonna put squirrels and rabbits on the table no more.

Hey Jim, I would’ve starved to death a looong time ago if I had to eat with what I got with a pistol. That’s what they make shotguns for. ( and sometimes that can be iffy )

I like shotguns. My favorites are Remington Model 11s.
But for most everything, I use handguns. Just can't shoot well anymore.

I usually start handgun range time with my .22 Mark I. It reveals (for a fraction of the ammo cost) how I'm going to be shooting when I then switch over to centerfire pistols.

I wouldn't let one bad day determine if your days are over. Look at the bright side, at least you were consistant.

I echo what Ranger said, put more lead downrange. Start closer and work further out when your satisfied.

It's also important to step back at certain times (post funeral strikes me as such) and just enjoy the me-time. Don't shoot like you want to be Olympic level, just go plink. As always, a box of 22's does that for me.

I used to shoot a lot of everything, but some back issues and some eye issues I just can't stand the recoil anymore, so I switched to bows. Sucks getting old, anyway I usually shoot my bow every day. Well, I took a little break cause my shoulder was sore. When I started back, I couldn't hit shit. I have been back to it for couple weeks and last night I couldn't miss @ 40 yards. Not that I'm a great shot just practice makes perfect.
My daughter likes to think she can shoot her bow once a month and then when Dad hits more targets than her, she is upset. I always tell her more practice.

I'm only 83, so don't consider myself old yet. But I am concerned about my current lack of control. I'm starting to think I may be limp wristing and/or yanking the trigger.

If you can hit a paper plate at 30 feet with a J-Frame, you’ll have no trouble hitting a bad guy. That’s what those little snubbed are for. For target shooting, at least get a K-Frame.

At 30 feet, I should be hitting a coke can every shot. I have no interest in a K-frame, and Js have been fine for my target shooting and hunting small game for over 65 years. Though I do do my best shooting with my long barrel .45acp 1860 Army clone conversion.
But these days I can't shoot it for crap either.

As an aside, I think I may have worn out the frame on my favorite carry pistol. An Airweight 637-2 9mm conversion. It lasted about 8 years.
