California made me do it

Discussion in 'New Member Welcome Area' started by Five.five-six, Jan 26, 2026.

  1. January 1 California started requiring all barrels and other “firearm precursors” to be transferred through a FFL. I’ll start a build thread explaining the synergy of combining California’s insanity with my own insanity but the long and short of it is that now I’m in the process of building an A5 from scratch.

Welcome sir. This is the first I have heard of this, but not surprising. Not really any gun owners place to want to be.

  3. Yea, but the weather….I did buy 11 various barrels Q4 2025 in compliance with the impending legislation. But now I have a fantastic jap invector barrel, new Boyd’s furniture, a Sarco stripped reciever and an old barreled action which sadly turned out to be a burn victim. I’m thinking I can salvage the trigger guard assembly and screws and perhaps some other bits but many of the major parts are too soft to use. I do hope to salvage the trigger guard assembly, it’s a suicide safety, which I think is pretty cool.

Good luck on your project. Keep us posted. The weather in Alaska is great.

    No problem. Some advice :
    dump the sure cycle kit
get you the proper screw drivers from Art or the bits from Brownell's
start looking for the correct wood furniture. The one on the top has correct wood, but someone had their way with it.
    get some 30-weight oil.

  7. I think I’m going to keep the Boyd’s this thing is going to be a functional mix master. The surfire kit was offered by Midwest. I wasn’t sold on it in the first place because A5’s seem to work just fine without them. Brownells no longer ships to CA but I already have their A5 screwdriver set.

I have no pretenses of making this gun “correct”. I want to make it functional.

Sounds like California is unbelievable headed crazy over top regulated wise like Down Under. That's compatible with the stupidity exhibited here.

  10. Eventually we will make it to SCOTUS and the pendulum will swing back.
Laws against AW’s MG’s SBR’s suppressors but they forgot to make a law against AOWs

I did buy a 10 pack of these and we are working on a legally compliant path to AOW from them.

I bought 4 of these, one of which is for my mixmaster A5 project. The bluing on them is fantastic

  11. the one on top was a club gun at the army’s officer’s club at Nürnberg. The work appears to be done by a German craftsman and it is fantastic. I really like it and I’m keeping it that way. My only issue with the gun is barrel is mod and I use it for trap, sporting clays and inland birds. Hence the jap invector barrel, which shoots fantastic but looks awful…. So I’m here for help building a utilitarian gun for hunting and playing. That top gun is destined to delight me in my safe and occasionally come out to play.

Would this bolt be appropriate for 12 gauge standard 2-3/4” build?

Yes it should work. I probably got one of those. Might be thin rail but would work also
