    As you know, Browning imports went with the prefixes after WWII. 1947 for the 16 gauge and 1953 with the 12. Until then there was no difference between imports and World Market guns; they were all sequential.

    WM guns continued with the sequential numbering until at least 1957 with 12 gauge SN 436700 — I cheated and looked at my notes. Shipping Log #16 is missing, and #17 starts off with a new system that’s pretty easy. 60/18701 is the 2-digit year in small font followed by the SN. So it’s anybody’s guess just when the change was made. The final number is 77/94628.

    As far as I can tell, the new system that was introduced in 1976, consisting of a model code, date code, and SN (For Belgian production. If produced in Japan the positions of the model code and SN were reversed.) was applicable to both Browning imports and World Market guns.
